Komarno
Komarno is a small rural community located about an hour north of Winnipeg, known for its strong local traditions and unmistakable sense of humour.
At the heart of the community is the Komarno Quality Store, which serves as a convenient hub for groceries, liquor, and postal services. The Komarno Community Hall is a lively gathering place that hosts popular annual events, including a Fall Supper and Dance in October, Perogy Fest in November, Ukrainian New Year’s Eve celebrations (“Malanka”) in January, spring pancake breakfasts, and a summer Mosquito Flea Market.
Komarno proudly embraces its reputation as the unofficial “mosquito capital of the world.” In fact, its name comes from the Ukrainian word for “full of mosquitoes.” This identity is celebrated with a giant mosquito statue that has become a local landmark. Support for the statue even included a contribution from the brand OFF! after a resident reached out for assistance.
In 2023, OFF! partnered with a local entomology expert from Winnipeg, Taz Stuart, to film a commercial in the community—featuring a barbecue attended by hundreds of locals and showcasing Komarno’s spirited and welcoming nature.
